Expand your Medicare coverage in Maryland |
After you have enrolled in Original Medicare, you have
options to expand
your coverage. Original Medicare is your Part A and Part B and they
cover a wide range of items. However, there are expenses within these parts
that you will be expected to pay out-of-pocket. Therefore, it’s a good idea to
consider expanding your Maryland Medicare coverage.
Supplemental Coverage in Maryland
One way you can expand your coverage is by applying for a
supplement plan in Maryland. Your supplement plan is your gap coverage that
pays after Original Medicare. Some or all the expenses that fall through the
gaps of your Original Medicare are what your supplement plan covers.
There are
ten different plans
offered in Maryland and each one covers a different number of items.
A few things that you can expect to pay out-of-pocket if you
were just to have Original Medicare are your Part A deductible, Part B
deductible, Part B excess charges, and your copays. Plan F covers 100% of the items
listed above plus some. Because of it being the most comprehensive plan offered
currently, it usually has the highest monthly premium.
Plan G covers everything just like Plan F however, is does
not cover your Part B annual deductible.
Without a supplement
plan you can expect to pay everything listed above along with other
items. All of which can potentially add up to thousands of dollars.
Maryland’s Medicare Advantage Plans
Having a Medicare
Advantage Plan can also give you additional coverage because it
includes your Original Medicare along with a Part D plan usually as well. Part
D is your drug plan that you can have to help you with your prescriptions from
retail pharmacies.
Each Advantage plan is different in the way that they increase
your coverage. Some plans even offer dental, vision, and even hearing coverage.
Advantage plans usually have cheaper monthly premiums because
they can sometimes have restrictions on providers and they don’t always cover
100% of certain items like supplement plans can. For example, a supplement plan
could cover your specialist’s copay in full, whereas your Advantage plan may
only cover part.
There are times that Medicare Advantage plans are easier to
enroll in than supplement plans. There is a certain one-time enrollment window
for Medicare Supplements called your Open
Enrollment Period where you can enroll in a supplement plan without
answering any medical questions.
If you miss that period you will have to answer those medical
questions and depending on your answers, they could deny you that coverage.
With Advantage Plans there is on one medical question, so
it’s easier to be accepted.
