Options of Extra Coverage in Delaware

Being known as the “First State” of the United States of America you might think that Delaware’s Medicare has older rules, but that is not the case at all. Delaware is just like most of the other states in the country. However, no matter what state you live in, it helps to know how Medicare works as a whole. Having knowledge of what your options are, and the details of each specific option is crucial to making an adequate decision.

Medicare in Delaware offers supplemental coverage to Original Medicare. The supplemental coverage is beneficial to those who need additional assistance with bills, or even for those who want convenience in having all plans lumped into one. There are two main options in Delaware and there are numerous choices within those two options. They’re known as Medicare Supplement Plans and Medicare Advantage Plans.

Medicare Supplements offered in Delaware

In short, Medicare Supplements pay AFTER Medicare. Basically, the bills that Medicare would normally leave you to be responsible for, your supplement pays for. If your Original Medicare does not cover it, then nor will your supplement. Supplements do not have networks, meaning that you can see any doctor that accepts Medicare.

Keep in mind that Medicare Supplements usually cost more than your other option, the Medicare Advantage Plans.  People who are normally prone to spending more money at doctor visits, having lab work done, and hospital bills are who should really consider going with a supplement. Delaware Medicare Advantage Plans

For people who don’t expect to spend as much money on additional Medicare bills and need a lower monthly premium, Medicare Advantage Plans are a good starting point for them. You never know what the future may bring you, so you may eventually need a supplement plan if you are surprised with a new medical problem. However, if you’re relatively healthy you most likely won’t have a problem with going with an advantage plan.

A benefit with having an advantage plan is that you do have an out-of-pocket cap. This means once you get to a certain limit set by your specific plan, they will help pay for the rest of that calendar year. If you just have Original Medicare and no supplemental coverage, you are left to pay your additional bills with NO CAP! For more information on Medicare Advantage Plans, click here.

Delaware also offers a program to assist low-income beneficiaries with their drug costs called The Delaware Prescription Assistance Program.
